NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL
Or Shalom’s Family School is one of the largest and most successful Family School Programs in the country. We were recognized nationally by the Association of Reform Jewish Educators (ARJE) when we received our accreditation in December of 2012. This summer, Or Shalom was awarded a $20,000 “Best Practices” grant from the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago to expand our Family Education programs to benefit all of our 3rd-6th grade students. Funding from this grant has enabled us to offer the following unique family experiences:
SUKKAHPALOOZA – Sukkah Building Contest!Sunday, September 27, 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., (grades 3-6) at the Elaine Frank Apachi JCC in Lake Zurich. Teambuilding through sukkah building, rock climbing and ropes courses, etrog baseball and making our own lulavim are included in this experiential day! B.Y.O. picnic lunch.
GAROON GATEWAY SCIENCE GARDENSaturday, October 10, 3:30 – 5:00 p.m., (grades 3-5) at the JCC’s Garoon Gateway.Together, we will play and explore this science garden modeled after the Clore Garden at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. Our adventure will close with Havdalah.
YOM SPACE (Space Day)Saturday, February 20, 4:00 – 5:30 p.m., (grades 3-5) at Or Shalom.Learn about space travel through a Jewish and Israeli perspective! Includes a “Moonwalk” and egg-drop parachute contest.
MACCABIAH (Israeli Olympics)Sunday, May 15, 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., (All-school event)We will end our school year with an all-school Maccabiah at the JCC in Lake Zurich! Event competitions from basketball and ga-ga to three-legged races. B.Y.O. picnic lunch.

New Student ConsecrationNew students in kindergarten through 3rd grade are invited to join us on the bimah for Consecration at Simchat Torah services on Sunday, October 4, at 6:30 p.m. Our new students will be formally welcomed into the school and given a small Torah of their own.

The Safer Synagogues program engages congregational leadership in learning and dialogue about the impact of abuse across the lifespan, improving access to support for congregants experiencing abusive situations, and coordinated community strategies that perpetuate healthy, peaceful Jewish homes, families and relationships.
