NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL
Students and parents will notice many exciting changes in our religious school this coming year! Our school stairwell is now a walk through the Torah—a beautiful mural depicting the stories of the Torah begins with Creation on the main level and (when it’s complete) ends with the book of Deuteronomy on the top landing. Our students will experience Torah before they even arrive at their classrooms!
Our first day of Sunday school is September 11. Students AND PARENTS will attend at their scheduled session time (8:45 a.m., early session and 10:50 a.m., late session). We’ll gather in the sanctuary for an energetic welcome from Rabbi Ari and Rhonda, and then families will travel from room to room participating in activities about the High Holidays. They will learn how to blow a shofar, sample High Holiday food, participate in a High Holiday game show—(bring your cell phone for the game), play High Holiday BINGO, meet a bee keeper and learn about honey making, create a beautiful honey pot and much more.
Our High Holiday Opening Day Workshops are open to everyone in the congregation—Tuesday/Thursday Hebrew families and empty nesters too! Come and join us for interactive learning about the High Holidays.
Our Hebrew teachers have been working hard all summer and are anxious to get started with “Hebrew Through Movement” with their students. This program will have our Hebrew students listening and responding to Hebrew phrases through movement. Jumping, spinning, walking and running are all part of the program. We know our students will find this is a fun way to learn modern Hebrew vocabulary, and they will look forward to increasing their vocabulary and movements each week. This new vocabulary will be incorporated into all aspects of our program. During services, we will have students lakoom (stand up) and lashevet (sit down) rather than our usual English prompts.
Our 7th and 8th grade program takes on a whole new look! Our new curriculum is comprised of six-week elective classes such as Jewish Genealogy, Jewish Cooking, Jews in Sports with Krav Maga, Israeli Inventions & Technology, Eco-Judaism, Jewish Rock & Rap Music, Jews in the Media and Jewish Art Recycled. This program has generated a lot of excitement among our teens and their families and has helped increase our 8th grade participation to an all-time high of 30 teens. We are thrilled that so many of our 8th graders are planning to participate in the 8th grade Chicagoland Winter Israel trip (Ta’am Yisrael). Registration is still open for this fabulous experience.
I look forward to seeing everyone and kicking off the school year with exciting and fun learning. Please refer to the religious school page on our website: orshalomlc.org/learning/religious-school for the school handbook, all forms and calendar.
