NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL
We are in the midst of “counting the Omer,” the seven weeks between the second day of Passover and the holiday of Shavuot. The Torah instructs us to bring a measure of barley (the Omer) and do a physical counting of the days leading up to the receiving of the Torah at Mount Sinai on the holiday of Shavuot. We count off seven weeks (49 days) and Shavuot begins on the 50th day.
It is interesting that the Torah give such specific instructions about counting. It foretells that something very important is going to happen (in this case—receiving the Torah). Counting the days until something momentous happens is something we all do. We all have seen Facebook page entries of couples counting down the days to their wedding, or couples counting the weeks of pregnancy until their baby is born! The Torah teaches us how to use this counting tool to get ready for upcoming events, and reminds us that all of our days are numbered, so it is our responsibility to make each day count.
