NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL
Join us on our last day of school, Sunday, May 15, from 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., at the JCC Elaine Frank Apachi Camp in Lake Zurich, for an exciting day of Maccabiah (Israeli Olympics)! Students and parents in kindergarten through 6th grade will be encouraged to compete, create, learn and celebrate! Participate in relay races, basketball, ga-ga, creating colored sand bottles, Dead Sea mud, wine making (stomping on grapes) and an obstacle course. Delight your taste buds at our huge Israeli brunch. For catering purposes, please register using the QR Code on the opposite page, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Express your thanks and honor our teachers by attending services on Friday, May 13, at 7:00 p.m., for Teacher Appreciation Shabbat! Our Junior choir will share their ruach in song and students (who volunteer) will be called to the bimah to speak or read a poem about their teachers. We will also honor and thank our graduating madrichim (teen assistants), who have worked in our religious school throughout high school. This year we honor Charlie Ball, Cameron Bernstein, Rikki Laser, Olivia Richardson and Andrew Solens.
Confirmation of our 10th grade students will take place on Sunday, May 22, at 10:00 a.m. This 10th grade class is an amazing group of motivated and caring teens who have enjoyed their biweekly discussions with Rabbi Ari. They will have the opportunity to lead the service and share their individual words about what Judaism means to them. They have enjoyed learning and being together so much, that they asked for a post-confirmation class with Rabbi Ari to continue their studies. Stay tuned for details on this new offering for the fall!
As this school year comes to a close, we are already working to make the 2016-17 school year an even richer experience. Or Shalom, together with Beth Am, Beth Judea and Temple Chai, was awarded a grant from the Community Foundation for Jewish Education to bring the Hebrew through Movement Program to our students. Our teachers will be trained on this curriculum which uses total physical response to teach modern Hebrew conversation and vocabulary. Students will be up and moving, using their bodies (jumping, clapping, dancing and laughing) as they learn. Hebrew through Movement was developed by the Jewish Education Center of Cleveland, and we are excited to bring the program to Or Shalom.
