NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL
This year our religious school was the recipient of a $20,000 grant from the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago to expand our family programming beyond our current Family School program. We were awarded this “Best Practices” grant in recognition of our dedication to family programming and the impact that it has on helping our families feel more connected to their Jewish learning and to our Or Shalom community.
We started the year with ‘Sukkahpalooza’—renting the JCC Apachi Camp to build sukkot and make lulavim. In October, we visited the Garoon Gateway for a Shabbat afternoon of science, concluding with havdallah. In mid-February we held ‘Yom Space,’ a day learning about Israel’s entry in the Google contest to put an unmanned spacecraft on the moon by 2017 for a $20 million prize! We learned about the moon in the planetarium, built parachutes for our egg drop down a flight of stairs, shot straw rockets, dressed up in astronaut gear and enjoyed freeze-dried astronaut fruit snacks and ice cream.
In addition to these special family programs, we hosted a PJ Library young children’s Hanukkah program in December, and a Family Bingo Night & Indoor Picnic in January. Our Family & Adult Retreat weekend at OSRUI at the end of February broke all prior participation records with over 100 participants!
Coming up on March 13, is our Purim Extravaganza beginning with a “Frozen” Purim-spiel, a megillah reading and song session at 10:15 a.m. Please help keep our family programming going by coming dressed in costume. The Purim Carnival will begin at 11:00 a.m. This has a rich Or Shalom tradition of involving over 200 children and adults in setting up; running the booths, kitchen, fish room; baking; selling tickets, etc. We need volunteers of all ages in order to make this a success. Please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org to sign up for set up on Saturday afternoon, March 12 (3:30 – 5:00 p.m.), or to help run a booth for a 30-minute shift.
Time preferences will be on a first-come, first-served basis:11:00 – 11:30 a.m. 11:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. 12:00 – 12:30 p.m. 12:30 – 1:00 p.m.
The Purim Carnival is a wonderful time to invite friends/relatives/neighbors for a day of fun and laughter and to see our community at its best—everyone joining together to make a great event.
