Energized…that’s how I’m feeling as I write this article shortly after returning from the Association of Reform Jewish Educators (ARJE) Annual Conference in Philadelphia. As always, when I attend this gathering, I learn about innovations in Jewish education and the best practices from speakers, break-out sessions, informal conversations and networking with colleagues.
Two of the sessions I attended focused on alternative ways to lead our student worship services. I look forward to incorporating new techniques to make our worship more meaningful, fun and engaging. One session was entitled “Pray Ball” and, yes, we actually tossed balls, stretched and jogged as part of the worship experience. I’m certain “pray ball” will be a hit with our students.
Visual t’filah (prayer) enhanced our services; liturgy and/or pictures were projected on a screen rather than using prayer books. I hope to use this technique in family school this month, and perhaps in our monthly Young Children’s services later this spring.
An unexpected “bonus” to this year’s conference was that I had an opportunity to meet and talk with Rachel Margolis, the wife of our new rabbi, Ari Margolis. Rachel is also a Jewish educator, and serves on the ARJE Board. Rachel and Rabbi Margolis are very excited about coming to Or Shalom, and I know their enthusiasm, knowledge and passion will be engaging for our entire congregation.
Upcoming special events in our religious school:
Wednesday, March 4—Erev Purim Service with Purim Spiel and Megillah reading at 6:30 p.m. Family school students should bring a picnic dinner, so they will be ready to join their family for the service at 6:30 p.m.
(Our dinner break from 6:00 – 6:30 p.m., will replace our 10-minute class-time hafsakah break.)
Sunday, March 8—Purim Carnival from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., in place of religious school. Buy your game cards in advance and receive five bonus prize tickets! Each family is asked to volunteer for a 30-minute shift running a game booth.

Wednesday, March 25 & Thursday, March 26—Hebrew school model seders during class. Parent volunteers are needed for set-up and clean-up. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
