Or Shalom experienced many changes this past year and learned that change can be wonderful and positive. Change is defined as “the act of making or becoming different.” While “becoming different” can be scary since it is unknown and unproven, it is through change that we grow, learn and evolve. Our interim rabbi, Nina Mizrahi, enriched our congregation with her spirituality and guided us through this transitional year, yet, our core values remain unchanged; we are who we are. Our religious school students experienced joy in learning about Judaism and progressed in their Hebrew studies; our Shabbat, holiday and b’nai mitzvah services were beautiful and meaningful; our adult learners were challenged and nurtured through classes and programs. Our retreats brought togetherstudents, families and adults in a more intimate setting at camp and fostered stronger relationships among congregants. In just a few days, Rabbi Ari Margolis will begin his tenure as Or Shalom’s new rabbi. We look forward to the new ideas, teaching and leadership that he will share with our congregation and our religious school. In addition, we are excited to welcome five new faces to our religious school staff who bring with them a variety of skills, including technology and social media expertise, that will enhance our students’ learning.
With Rabbi Ari’s guidance, we will continue to build our Or Shalom community. Our congregation has always been a place where everyone rolls up their sleeves and works together—whether running a booth or setting up for the Purim carnival, bringing treats for the Oneg Shabbat or helping on one of our committees. Our Education Committee is always open to new ideas, if you are interested in serving on this important committee, please contact Education Vice President Jeff Kruger. Weare also looking for volunteers to help in classrooms, the school office, the library or Hebrew tutoring—email me if you can help, and I’ll be in touch with you to work out the details.
