From our rabbiI’m incredibly excited to be writing to you on the approach of the new school year, with the High Holidays on their way and so much wonderful excitement going on here at Or Shalom. I knew when my family decided to come here, we would be in a great place, but every day we all feel luckier and luckier to be a part of this incredible and vibrant community.
I want to make sure we all feel the way my family feels about being here, whether we’ve just entered the Or Shalom family, whether we are founding members of this congregation, whether we serve on the board of trustees or a committee or we just jump in from time-to-time, on occasion. I’ve seen our uplifting and fun celebrations, and I’ve seen the way our community can rally and be there on a moment’s notice to comfort and support. These are some of the most foundational Jewish values in our tradition, mentioned in our Talmud and in our liturgy—visiting the sick, welcoming the person we do not yet know, celebrating with others on a wonderful occasion, looking after the most vulnerable among us. I may be tipping my kippah a bit prior to our High Holiday services, but I’m hoping that during this next year of our time together, we can commit ourselves to these pillars of community-building even more.
The pages of this Shofar newsletter are jam-packed with opportunities to create connections, to discover parts of ourselves through learning and to build a better world both here and beyond through social action. These various events and programs exist to help us grow as a family, together. Please, for your own good and for the good of our Or Shalom community, take a real look through all that is going on, and try something out. I’m confident that, when you do, you’ll be happy and grateful to be here. I look forward to seeing you soon.
