Message from the President . . .“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel,” by Maya Angelou, is one of my favorite quotes. As the president, I want you to feel good about being a part of Or Shalom.This is your synagogue. This is your community. There is no better way to integrate yourself into your community than by getting involved. We have many volunteer opportunities throughout the year. We have many diverse committees for you to get involved with as well. These committees help shape the direction of our future in many facets, including spiritual, educational, financial and tikkun olam—healing the world. This Hebrew phrase emphasizes that it is humanity’s shared responsibility to heal, repair and transform the world. At Or Shalom, we can be extremely proud of the impact we made within our community, by donating hundreds of pounds of vegeta-bles from our Mitzvah Garden to homeless shelters, providing Mitzvah Meals to local children and volunteering for Maot Chitim. These are just a few examples of our commitment to our community. Our new Hineynu Community will allow us to reach out to our congregants who need comfort, and just to let them know we are thinking of them.It’s also our job to make the wonderful community we have here at Or Shalom, your community, one where you feel welcome, comfortable and important. Our congregation is blessed with many involved and active members. But, for those of you who feel like you are on the outside looking in, we need to find better ways to help you feel connected, and to inspire you to continue your Jewish journey.If you have interests or ideas, please make them known to the rabbi, a board member or a staff member. I encourage all of you to step forward to become more involved; it will be another way for you to connect and engage with your Or Shalom community. Use your Or Shalom membership to learn, to grow and to give back.
